March 21, 2008
Baton Rouge, La. - LSU's Killian Roessner hit a two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th inning to give 10th-ranked LSU a 5-3 game two victory and a double-header sweep of the Auburn softball team Friday. LSU won game one 8-1. Auburn dropped to 27-6 overall and 7-3 in the Southeastern Conference. LSU improved to 26-4 overall and 5-0 in the SEC. In game two, LSU rallied with a run in the bottom of the seventh to even the score at 3-3 and send the game to extra innings. Dani Hofer, who won game one, earned the win in relief for LSU, throwing 2.0 innings and striking out four. Hofer improved to 14-2 with the win. Anna Thompson (9-4) took the loss for Auburn after throwing 9.0 innings, allowing five runs, three earned, on eight hits and striking out 12. Tatiana Fernandez got the Tigers on the board in the top of the first with an RBI double to center. Myesha Finney walked and then stole second. With two outs, Fernandez doubled to center to score Finney for a 1-0 Auburn lead. The lead was short lived however, as LSU tied the game on a sacrifice fly to left by Roessner that plated Jazz Jackson in the bottom of the first inning. Rachel Mitchell gave LSU a 2-1 lead with a one-out, solo home run to left-center in the bottom of the third inning. The Tigers rallied in the fourth inning. Finney singled to open the inning and came around to score on Fernandez's doubled to right-center. It was Fernandez's second double of the game. Jorja Bell followed with a sharp single up the middle to score pinch-runner Megan Mitchell and give Auburn a 3-2 lead.
With two outs in the seventh, Roessner hit a bloop single to right that scored Jackson from second and tied the game at 3-3. Jackson singled to left with two outs and moved to second when Mitchell walked. With the winning run at third, Thompson fanned Tayl'r Hollis to send the game into extra innings. In game one, LSU's Dani Hofer (13-2) held Auburn to one run on three hits as LSU claimed game one of the double-header 8-1. Hofer fanned 15 in the win. Brittany Day (8-2) took the loss for Auburn after giving up two runs, both earned, on five hits in 2.0 innings of work. LSU jumped on the scoreboard in the third inning. After three consecutive ground ball singles loaded the bases with no outs, Rachel Mitchell doubled off the wall in center to score Shannon Stein and Dee Dee Henderson to give LSU a 2-0 lead. LSU added to its lead in the fourth inning. Quinlan Duhon singled and moved to second when Stein walked. Henderson then laced a triple to right-center that plated both runners to give LSU a 4-0 lead. LSU padded its lead in the fifth inning. Pinch-hitter Casey Faile hit a bouncing ball single over Jorja Bell's head at first to plate Tayl'r Hollis and Erika Sluss to push the deficit to 6-0. Cassie Trosclair got the Tigers going in the top of the sixth with a leadoff single up the middle. Brittany Scott followed with a triple to the wall in center to score Trosclair to make it a 6-1 game. But that would be all Hofer would allow. In the bottom of the sixth, LSU continued its offensive outburst. Henderson singled and Jazz Jackson doubled her home to open the inning to make it a 7-1 game. Mitchell followed with the second double of the inning to score Jackson and push the score to what would be the final 8-1 margin of victory for LSU. |
