Auburn Gymnastics Signs Three For 2008
Nov. 8, 2006 AUBURN, Ala. - Becky Blahyj, Lauren Brzostowski and Katie Hurley have signed National Letters of Intent to attend Auburn University and participate in gymnastics in the 2008 season, head coach Jeff Thompson announced Wednesday. "We are very excited about this class," Thompson said. "Together they are the complete package. I have never had a group more excited about being part of this family."
Blahyj, who trains at Rochester Gymnastics Academy in East Rochester, New York with coach Youlia Penev, was the 2005 Regional vault and floor exercise champion. She last competed in the USA Gymnastics Junior Olympic National Championships in 2005 and posted a top-5 finish on vault. In 2004, Blahyj went undefeated in the all-around competition for her entire regular season. "She is a great gymnast from a wonderful family and we are very excited that she has chosen Auburn," said Thompson. The 4-11 senior from Our Lady of Mercy High School is expected to excel on all four events next season for the Tigers. Blahyj is the daughter of Ihor and Linda Blahyj.
Brzostowski trains at Prestige Gymnastics in Lancaster, Pennsylvania under the direction of owners Tony and Jen Fatta. "Lauren is one of the best beam workers that we have signed to date," Thompson said. Brzostowski is a former Pennsylvania State Champion on Balance Beam and is expected to compete in the all-around and have an immediate impact on a Tiger beam team already deep with former balance beam champions. The 5-0 senior from Dallastown Area High School is the daughter of Peter and Diane Brozstowski.
Hurley, who trains at Brestyan's American Gymnastics Club in Ashland, Massachusetts with coaches Mihai and Sylvia Brestyan, is a former Junior Olympic National competitor. The King Philip Regional High School senior missed the 2006 season with a broken ankle, but, is described by coach Thompson as "one of the most elegant gymnasts" he has ever recruited. "Katie will be a star for Auburn," said Thompson. Hurley, who is expected to compete in the all-around as a freshman, is the daughter of Jim and Diane Hurley.
