Auburn Edged By Tide in Closest Meet In Thompson Era
Jan. 18, 2008 Auburn, Ala. - Auburn's Julie Dwyer tied a career high mark on beam Friday night, but it was not enough as No. 3 Alabama edged the Tigers gymnastics team 196.425-195.900 at Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum. "I am really proud of our gymnasts. I bet no other team in the nation improves by four points like we did," said Auburn head coach Jeff Thompson. "We gained confidence tonight." After the vault and bar competitions, Auburn trailed Alabama by only .150, with a 9.900 bars performance by A.J. Mills and a 9.850 performance by Dwyer. However, two Alabama gymnasts tied for first on floor with 9.900, to secure the victory for the Crimson Tide. Auburn gymnasts took first place spots on two events. Auburn junior Lindsey Puckett scored 9.875 on vault and Dwyer took first on beam scoring 9.925. Teammate A.J. Mills was not far behind Dwyer on beam, taking second place and scoring 9.900. "Everything happened the way we said it needed to in order for us to have a chance to win," said Thompson said. "It was close enough to make them nervous, but not close enough to make them make a mistake." The Tigers will travel to Denver Sunday, Jan. 20, to face the No. 14 Denver Pioneers at 3 p.m. CT in Hamilton Gymnasium. The Tigers will return to Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum on Jan. 25, to face SEC rival and No. 1-ranked Florida. Results
