Cydney Clanton Named SEC Freshman Golfer Of The Year; Three Tigers Earn All-SEC Honors
April 23, 2008
Birmingham, Ala. - A successful season for the No. 11 Auburn women's golf has produced four postseason honors for three members of the team. Freshman Cydney Clanton was named SEC Freshman of the Year and First-Team All-SEC and sophomore Candace Schepperle and senior Margaret Shirley were named Second-Team All-SEC, the conference office announced Wednesday. Clanton has played in every tournament this season and currently averages a team best 73.57 strokes-per-round, a mark good enough for third in the SEC and 14th in the nation. She has amassed six top-10 finishes this year, including four in the top-five. Her best finish of the year came at the UT Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship in October where she tied for first. In addition to Freshman of the Year honors, Clanton was also named First-Team All-SEC and was part of the All-Freshman team. She posted a career best 18-hole score of 66 in the first round of the UCF Challenge, which tied for the second lowest ever at Auburn and was the lowest 18-hole score by a freshman. She is the sixth Auburn golfer in the last nine years to be named SEC Freshman of the Year. "Cydney has really had a standout year," head coach Kim Evans said. "We are excited to see what the last two events this year have in store for her as she continues to achieve her goals." The All-SEC honor is Schepperle's second as she also earned second-team honors last season, in addition to being named SEC Freshman of the Year. Schepperle has competed in every tournament this season and is second on the team with a 74.97 strokes-per-round average. She has four top-20 finishes this season, including two in the top 10.
Shirley is making her third straight appearance on the second team and is currently third on the team with a 75.30 average. Last weekend at the SEC Championship Shirley put together three strong rounds of play, including a final round of 2-under 70 to tie for fourth. She has three top-20 finishes this season. Shirley was also named to the SEC Community Service team for the third time in her career last week. "Candace and Margaret both stepped up this spring season," Evans said. "They earned this honor in our last three events and I am very happy for them. Our season isn't over yet and we are going to keep moving along with our same goal of being at the top." Auburn will learn its destination for NCAA Regionals on April 28 when the NCAA makes its selection at 4 p.m. CT. The three locations will be Athens, Ga., Austin, Texas, and Sacramento, Calif. NCAA Regionals will be held May 8-10. 2008 SEC Women's Golf Awards SEC COACH OF THE YEAR: Jill Briles-Hinton, Florida
