No. 25 Men's Tennis Falls In Home Finale To Georgia, 7-0
March 30, 2008 AUBURN - Defending national champion Georgia won all six singles matches and all three doubles matches Sunday as the No. 3 Bulldogs defeated No. 25 Auburn, 7-0, in the Tigers' final home match of the season. Georgia improved to 18-1, 8-0 SEC as the Bulldogs lengthened their SEC winning streak to 31-0 since 2005. Auburn evened its season at 9-9 and fell to 3-5 in the SEC. "We got beat by a better team today, but we have to learn from it and get better," head coach Eric Shore said. "Now, we have to let it go and get ready for two tough road matches next week." Auburn was swept in the doubles for only the second time this season. Travis Helgeson and Luis Flores started things off with a win over Tim Puetz and Lukas Marsoun, 8-4. Javier Garrapiz and Josh Varela then defeated Pawel Dilaj and Milan Krnjetin, 8-5, to seal the doubles point. No. 31 Jamie Hunt and Nate Schnugg finished up doubles play by defeating Alexey Tsyrenov and Terence Nugent, 9-7. The Bulldogs continued their run in singles play, winning all six match-ups. Josh Varela quickly defeated Alex Petropoulos on court six, 6-1, 6-1. Senior Nugent could not pull out the win as he lost to No. 63 Flores, 6-2, 6-4, in the No. 3 spot. No. 6 Helgeson fought off No. 35 Tsyrenov, 6-0, 6-4 to get the match-clinching fourth point. Puetz lost to No. 8 Schnugg, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 on court two as Marsoun was defeated by No. 36 Hunt, 6-1, 7-5. Senior Dilaj finished up at No. 5 against No. 93 Garrapiz in three sets, 2-6, 6-1, 1-0 (11-9). Auburn returns to action on Friday, April 4 as the Tigers travel to No. 8 Florida for a 2 p.m. CT match.
