AUBURN - The Auburn men's and women's golf teams will soon have a new place to call home.

In the fall of 2006, construction began on a $1.95 million golf teaching facility that will house the men's and women's teams. Completion of the building is scheduled for this fall.

The 8,300 square foot facility is located two miles from campus off Donahue Drive and will include a lobby area, office space for men's and women's golf head coaches as well as a trophy/awards display for men's and women's golf.

"There is no telling what it can do for our program, because we were ahead of things for a long time and then all of a sudden, we kind of got behind the bubble a little bit," Auburn head men's golf coach Mike Griffin said. "Now, not only have we caught up, I think we have gone ahead, because I think this is the best building in the country at this point.

"We put the good things of all the buildings around the country into this particular facility. The way I look at it, this building is the biggest and best. It is going to mean so much for our young men and women in our program. Our young men and women are now going to have an opportunity to enjoy having a home to hang their hat and a place to put their clubs. They will have a first rate, first class practice and teaching facility at their access."

The new facility will also feature a team meeting room, men's and women's locker rooms and indoor hitting bays that open onto the driving range.

"I'm very excited," Auburn head women's golf coach Kim Evans said. "I want to come over everyday and experience it. I just can't wait until next fall when our student athletes get to walk through and we get to show the entire Auburn family the history of Auburn golf. The future of Auburn golf is right here on this property and in this building."

Named as the No. 1 area for golf in the country by Golf Digest in 2005, Auburn-Opelika is home to several facilities used by Auburn golf including the Auburn University Club, Grand National, Saugahatchee Country Club, Auburn Links, Farm Links, Moore's Mill Golf Course and Indian Pines Golf Course.
