TEAM NOTES
Tonight's game was the first game ever between Auburn and West
Virginia.
Auburn is now 5-3-1 all-time against current members of the Big
East Conference.
Auburn is now 6-2 in games played on Thursday nights.
Tonight's game marked Auburn's first non-conference road
game since a 2003 contest at Georgia Tech.
Auburn marched 81 yards on 20 plays during its opening drive,
using 9:54 on the clock. It marked the longest scoring drive of the
season for the Tigers in terms of yardage, plays and time. The previous
longest drive for yardage was 78 yards against Louisiana-Monroe, the
most plays were 12 against ULM and the longest scoring drive in terms of
time was 5:44 against Tennessee.
The 20-play scoring drive marked the most plays in a drive by
Auburn since records began being kept in 1970. The previous long was a
19-play, 90-yard drive against Ole Miss on Oct. 4, 1985.
Auburn scored first on a 19-yard Wes Byrum field goal. Auburn is
now 4-2 this season when scoring first.
Auburn outscored West Virginia 3-0 in the first quarter. The
Tigers have now outscored their opponents 44-6 in the first quarter and
have not allowed a touchdown in the first quarter this season.
Auburn's 27-second scoring drive in the second quarter was its
second-shortest of the season (19 seconds vs. Arkansas) and shortest
that resulted in a touchdown. It was the sixth this season of less than
one minute.
Auburn attempted its first on-side kick of the season in the
second quarter, and Wes Byrum recovered it. It was Auburn's first
successful on-side kick since 2006 at South Carolina, which also was on
a Thursday night.
Auburn had its seventh third-down conversion with just over
three minutes left in the second half, setting a new season high for
most third-down conversions in a game. The Tigers, who finished with
nine third-down conversions, had six against Tennessee.
Auburn led 17-10 at halftime. The Tigers have now led at
halftime of every game and have outscored their opponents 105-36 in the
first half this season.
Auburn trailed 20-17 after three quarters. The Tigers are now
0-3 this season when trailing after three quarters.
INDIVIDUAL NOTES
With 37 yards rushing Brad Lester passed Curtis Kuykendall
(1944-45) for 20th in Auburn history for career rushing yards with
1.620.
Kodi Burns finished with a season-high 82 yards rushing. His
career high is 87 yards rushing in 2007 vs. Mississippi State.
Josh Bynes had his second career interception and second in as
many games in the first quarter. His first career interception came
against Arkansas.
Walter McFadden had his third career interception and second of
the season in the first quarter. His first interception this season came
in the closing seconds at Mississippi State.
Antonio Coleman had his sixth sack of the season and now has
14.5 for his career. He needs one more to crack Auburn's career top
10.
Wes Byrum kicked his eighth field goal of the season and 25th of
his career from 19 yards to end Auburn's opening drive.
Brad Lester caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from Kodi Burns in
the second quarter. It marked Lester's 22nd career touchdown and third
receiving. It was Burns' first TD pass of the season and third of his
career.
Mario Fannin had a career-long 69-yard kickoff return in the
second quarter. His previous long was 40 yards in 2007 against
Mississippi State.
Tristan Davis had a 62-yard kickoff return in the third quarter,
which was his second-longest of the season. It marked the first time
Auburn had two kickoff returns of over 50 yards in a game since Ball
State in 2005 (Brad Lester ' 92; Devin Aromashodu ' 52).
Kodi Burns scored on a 9-yard touchdown run in the second
quarter. It was his second rushing touchdown of the season and the fifth
of his career.
