AUBURN -- Former Auburn All-America catcher Casey Dunn will join the Tigers’ baseball staff announced head coach Tom Slater Wednesday. Dunn, who spent the last three seasons as the head coach at Spain Park High School in Hoover, Ala., will coach the catchers, assist with the hitting and help coordinate camps.
“I am excited about the opportunity to return to Auburn,” said Dunn. “I am also excited about the things that Coach Slater will be able to do. I am looking forward to being back.”
A four-year letterman for the Tigers from 1996-99, Dunn earned All-America honors as a senior after batting .379 with a Southeastern Conference leading 86 runs batted in. A two-time All-SEC selection, he helped lead Auburn to a 1999 NCAA Regional Championship, an SEC Tournament title in 1998 and a berth in the 1997 College World Series.
Dunn started the program at Spain Park in 2002 and compiled an overall record of 53-41 in three seasons. He led his teams to two Jefferson County titles, a co-region championship and two state playoff appearances. He was named the Over the Mountain Coach of the Year in 2002 and the Birmingham News Coach of the Year in 2003.
“We are very excited to have one of the outstanding young coaches joining Auburn University and the Auburn baseball family,” said Slater. “Casey was an outstanding player at Auburn who had a great work ethic. He’s been very successful while starting the program at Spain Park. He comes from a very strong coaching family as his father, Sammy Dunn, is a coaching legend at Vestavia Hills. Casey will be a great addition to our staff.”
Dunn finished his Auburn career ranked in the top five in several Auburn career records including hits (third, 307), RBI (third, 232), total bases (third, 470), at bats (third, 905), games played (fifth, 231) and extra-base hits (fifth, 95).
Following his senior year, Dunn was presented with the Cliff Hare Award which is the highest honor an Auburn athlete can receive.
A 1999 graduate of Auburn with a degree in Social Science Secondary Education, Dunn spent two seasons in the Kansas City Royals organization, playing in both Wilmington, N.C. and Spokane, Wash.
Dunn is married to the former Marty Goldthorp who was a four-year letterwinner on the golf team from 1996-99. The couple have one son, Sam, 11-months.
