Auburn Baseball Drops Home Finale To Mercer, 2-1 May 18, 2004
AUBURN - The Auburn baseball team dropped its final regular season home game to Mercer, 2-1, on Tuesday at Plainsman Park. The Tigers fell to 31-22, while the Bears improved to 20-32. Philip Morrison (4-10) pitched six scoreless innings in the win for Mercer. Morrison scattered five hits while striking out seven. Brian Jones picked up his first save of the season after allowing a run in three innings. John Madden (1-2) took the loss for Auburn after allowing a run in 2 1/3 innings. Tigers' starter Mike Felix gave up an unearned run on two hits with four strikeouts in four innings. Mercer broke the scoreless tie in the fourth inning on Ty Megahee's RBI single scoring Josh Thompson from third. Thompson reached on a fielding error by Tigers' right fielder J.T. Williamson, went to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on a fly out before Megahee's two-out single. The Bears took a 2-0 advantage in the seventh on a bases loaded one-out ground out to first base by Roger Alvarez. Madden walked Andrew Einert, Chase Swanson followed with a single and Rick Byrd walked to load the bases. Auburn scored in the seventh on Chuck Jeroloman's two-out single to center field scoring Clete Thomas from second. Thomas reached on a fielder's choice and stole second before Jeroloman's RBI single. Tug Hulett and Ben Maitland each had three hits for Auburn. Ty MeGahee had two hits to pace Mercer. The Tigers will conclude the regular season schedule this weekend with a three-game SEC series at Arkansas, May 21-23. Friday's opener begins at 7 p.m. CT at Baum Stadium.
