Matt Targett In Third Heading Into 100m Free Finals At Australian Trials
March 25, 2008
SYDNEY, Australia - Auburn's Matt Targett and Rachel Goh were back in action Monday and Tuesday at the 2008 Telestra Australian Swimming Championships in Sydney, Australia. The meet is being used as a selection meet for the Australian National Team at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China. Both swimmers are taking the year off from the Auburn swimming and diving team as the Olympic selection meet conflicts with the 2008 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. The women's championships are currently in their final day with the men's NCAA Championships slated for March 27-29. Targett had the top finish of the two as he finished third in the 100m freestyle semi-finals with a time of 48.79, coming in behind Eamon Sullivan, who recently set the World record in the 50m free. Targett advanced to the semi-finals following a 49.41 in the preliminaries. Finals in the event will take place on Wednesday. Goh's top swim came in the 100m backstroke on Monday as she finished seventh in the finals with a time of 1:02.41, finishing behind first-place Emily Seebohm (59.59). Goh swam a 1:02.38 in the semi-finals to advance to the finals. Action in the meet continues Wednesday and goes through Saturday, March 29.
